Calories

It's a word feared by many, but we should be praising its name. Every organ in our body requires a certain amount of energy to function. Here is the rundown on what it needs if we were to lie completely still for twenty-fours hours:

RESTING METABOLIC RATE

Organ % RMR Calories
Brain 21 315
Heart 10 150
Kidney 7 105
Liver 32 480
Lungs 9 135
Other tissues 21 315

Total   1500

This is approximately 60-75% energy a person uses each day. The average woman needs about 2000-2200 calories per day. (Source- Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook.) Our bodies are pretty flexible, and combat starvation with their own nifty trick- hypometabolism. After a while, it'll lower it's resting metabolic rate, so that it needs fewer caloires to run. So what's the answer, then? You already know the answer: old-fashioned vegetables and exercise.
