"Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic, to the level of romantic fairy story... the cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd."

Tolkien wrote a letter to Milton Waldman addressing his wish to create a myth that could be expanded upon by fellow artists. Middle-earth is that myth. Don't disappoint the professor. Conjure something up today!

As much as I love Lord of the Rings, it doesn't need another fansite. The online Middle-earth universe is so vast and riddled with garbage it's as treacherous as Mount Doom. Still, amidst the Mary Sues and unintelligible psychobabble, there are some precious jems. To commemorate those sites, I've created a directory of places that I believe are worth visiting. Hopefully it'll save you from the horrors I've gone through finding them. :)

a Mini-Balrog gets its 'wings'"
