NATUROPATHY
Naturopathy, in a sense, is the oldest philosophy of medicine known. The key
principles of naturopathy are:
The Healing Power of Nature. The body has an inherent ability (through its vital
energy) to heal itself,
restore health, and ward off disease. Naturopathic practitioners use methods
believed to be in congruence
with natural healing processes. Treat the Whole Person. Naturopathy is inherently
Holistic in the sense
that a persons overall health is viewed as resulting from a complex interaction
of physical, mental, emotional,
genetic, spiritual, environmental, social, and other factors. First Do No Harm.
A physicians first
responsibility is to use treatments that do not harm the body or interfere with
its inherent healing capabilities.
Naturopaths typically use non-invasive techniques that, in general, have fewer
side effects and carry
less risk than more conventional medical practices and procedures. Identify
and Treat the Cause. Symptoms
are regarded as signals that the body is out of balance, and, also, as expressions
of the bodys attempts
to heal itself. Treatment should be directed to underlying causes, rather than
to the suppression of symptoms.
Prevention is the Best Cure. Great Emphasis is placed on behavior and lifestyle
as means of preventing
illness. Doctor as Teacher. One of a physicians responsibilities, and
much of naturopathic intervention,
involves educating the patient and encouraging self-responsibility and self-care.
Some of the conditions for
which naturopathic methods are commonly used include: nutritional deficiencies,
digestive disorders, bowel
diseases, chronic illnesses, childhood diseases, allergies, asthma, chronic
infections, heart disease, hypertension,
fibromyalgia, AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, diabetes,
osteoporosis,
psoriasis, eczema, and many others.
